April 2007-04-25 – Personnel Files Human Resources

David Yeoman, who runs Scottish Business Mentoring & Sport practice ROOTS, SHOOTS FRUITS – also holds that boredom is one reason why the UK workplace is currently experiencing high levels of staff turnover.  But in addition, he claims that management bullying of staff is also a major cause.

There have been two recent high-profile cases involving bulling: the media sales manager who was harassed and suffered discrimination for being gay and Strathyclyde Police’s most senior female officer is currently under investigation for bullying.

It is alleged that Chief Superintendent Jeanette Joyce, who heads the Complaints and Discipline unit, bullied and swore at her staff, used an oppressive management style and overworked staff she did not like.

Yeoman claims that this is typical behaviour of someone who may have been promoted above their capabilities.  He says they tend to control their staff by the tone and pitch of their voice to cover up their own inadequacies.

“Her poor 1970’s management style has meant she has no followers”, he says, “so she is not a true leader”.

“Worryingly, this is a growing problem in UK businesses and can only be eradicated by enlightened business owners in the 21st century.
